Hydro-Power As An Effective Energy Platform - Generating Energy With Water
Much like solar and wind power, hydro-power has been a constant energy source for man. The following is an introduction to hydro-power.
Hydro-power As An Energy Platform
Hydro-power can be defined simply as using the power of flowing water to generate power. With early man, this power was experienced in the type of propulsion as in moving wheels to grind food materials.
With modern man, hydro-power is used to turn turbines that generate electricity. In cases like the Three Gorges Dam in China, this platform can be the basis of providing huge amounts of energy to countries in need.
Let's check out an overview of developments in hydro-power:
Over 2000 years ago, hydro-power was used by the Greeks to turn grinding wheels to turn wheat into flour.
During the 1770s, French engineer Bernard Forest de Belidor wrote Architecture Hydraulique, a four-volume series describing mechanisms that could be used to convert flowing water into power.
1880 - Michigan's Grand Rapids Electric Light and Energy Company showcased the first commercial application for electricity generated from hydro-power. The company used a turbine to supply power to a whopping 16 lamps in the Wolverine Chair Factory.
1881 - Niagara Falls votes to convert all lamps on streets to electricity provided by hydro-power, which made sense considering their location.
1882 - The very first power plant devoted entirely to hydro-power electricity production goes online in Wisconsin. The energy is produced from water in the Fox River.
1886 - Hydro-power facilities are so popular that over 40 are functioning in Canada and the United States
1889 - Only three years later, the number of hydro-power plants within the two countries grows to 200.
1907 - Hydro plants produce 15 percent of the electrical power needs of the United States.
1920 - Hydro plants generate 25 percent of the electrical power requirements of the United States.
1933 - Hydro-power comes to the forefront with the establishment of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
1940 - Hydro plants offer a whopping forty percent of all electrical energy produced in the United States.
2003 - At the turn of the century, hydro-power has lost much of its allure. Population growth results in power demands so high that hydro-power isn't viewed as a fix.
Environmental issues also trigger a slow down. Only ten percent of the electrical energy within the United States is produced by hydro-power.
